Retail Arbitrage Series: Dunelm

Welcome back to the Retail Arbitrage series. This week, we’re covering a massively underrated store that flies under the radar for many sellers – Dunelm.

This is one of those shops that most resellers walk straight past without thinking twice, and that’s exactly why you should be walking straight in. Over the years, I’ve found some absolute gems in Dunelm, particularly in the kitchen section. Yes, some of the items are slow sellers, but the margins and ROIs are often huge, and competition is usually low. So let’s dive into it.

How Dunelm Works

Dunelm is a UK home furnishings store with a layout focused on home decor, furniture, and essentials like:

  • Bedding & curtains
  • Bathroom accessories
  • Kitchenware & appliances
  • Home storage & seasonal stock

It might not look like a sourcing hotspot at first glance, but that’s exactly what makes it valuable. The store is constantly running clearance throughout the year. You’ll notice clearance tags on shelves, ends of aisles, and standalone displays.

The kitchen section is the primary area to focus on for resellers. You’ll find branded kitchenware and appliances at heavily reduced prices, with profit potential hiding in plain sight.

Where to Find Profitable Items

Focus your time in the kitchen section. It’s where I’ve found 90% of my profitable products in Dunelm. Here’s what to look for:

  • End of aisle clearance shelves
  • Discounted items down the kitchen aisles
  • Recognisable branded items including:
    • GreenPan
    • KitchenAid
    • Smeg
    • Kilner

You’ll often find these with big markdowns, and many of them sell for great profits despite being slower movers. Another big bonus, when a product goes on clearance, it often drops in multiple Dunelm stores at the same time, meaning you can source across several locations in a short period.

How Clearance Works

Dunelm runs clearance all year round, meaning you’ll find marked down products throughout the year rather than during specific seasons. Look in these spots:

  • End of aisles in the kitchen section
  • Down the main aisles amongst regular stock
  • Standalone displays with red or yellow clearance tags

The trick is to scan a wide range of products, particularly the more premium looking items and big name brands. These items often sell slower but come with less competition and high ROI.

Best Time of Year for Dunelm

There isn’t a defined “hot season” for Dunelm like there is with toy retailers or Q4 heavy stores. Dunelm is just good all year round.

That’s why it’s worth checking every time you’re sourcing at a retail park. Build it into your regular circuit and give the kitchen section a solid 10–15 minutes of your time. The returns will be worth it.

Dunelm Hacks

  • Focus on kitchenware — this is where 90% of the good stuff hides
  • Scan everything branded
  • Look at ends of aisles and down kitchen sections
  • Visit Dunelm as part of your retail park run
  • Don’t avoid slow sellers, they sell, and often with less competition
  • Aim for high-margin, low COGS stock
  • You can often replicate finds in multiple stores

Pros and Cons of Dunelm

Pros

  • Located in retail parks — easy to fit into RA trips
  • Low COGS, high ROI potential
  • Good branded stock in kitchen section
  • Less reseller competition than other stores
  • Multiple store coverage available
  • Constant clearance rotation

Cons

  • Stock is a bit “scatty” — requires some digging
  • Usually limited quantities per product
  • Items can sell slowly — but they do sell

Final Thoughts

Dunelm is one of the most underrated retail arbitrage stores out there. When I was in full time RA sourcing mode, I always made time for Dunelm and I regularly found products with excellent margins, particularly in the kitchen section.

It’s not the flashiest shop. It’s not a store that’s talked about much in Discord groups. But if you want to buck the trend and find deals others are ignoring, Dunelm is exactly the kind of place you want to include in your routes. Be consistent, check for clearance, scan everything branded, and you’ll be surprised at what you walk away with.
